Compressor Test

Today I performed the compressor test to measure the potential airflow produced by the compressor at various speeds. To perform the test I used an alternator testing machine which uses an electric motor to drive a pulley. The compressor was then clamped in place with the drive pulley and compressor pulley aligned. After connecting the two with a V-belt, I bolted the tester to the high pressure outlet side of the compressor and set up a power supply to engage the compressor clutch.

As expected, the results varied as the compressor came up to temperature rose so multiple tests were performed. Below are the results of the test.

Since the compressor pulley and test machine pulley were different sizes and the machine rpm was recorded and the corresponding compressor rpm calculated using the pulley ratio. The test machine was older and struggled to get to its 3000 rpm maximum speed but the data will be extrapolated to approximate flow at greater speeds.

The next step will be converting the measurements in to more usable units, plotting the data, and comparing it to the theoretical requirements of the engine with 100% volumetric efficiency.
